Cornish Holiday Fun

In 2017 we included Cornwall to our list of holiday destinations.  It has been such a resounding success that we have holidayed there 3 times this year, in May, July and September.

The Cornish holiday is based near St Austell at the Tor View Centre. The centre is on a working farm, set back from the coast, up in the stunning moors. The accommodation is an upside down house, with plenty of wheelchair access, stair-lifts, large rooms and beautiful surrounding views.

St Austell itself is close to a number of attractions, such as the Eden Project, the Lost Gardens of Heligan, Charlestown, and of course, the beach. There are wonderful walks along cliff-top paths and the coastline is dotted with pretty coves and charming old fishing ports. Close by are the Cornish moorlands for a blast of fresh air in one of Cornwall’s areas of outstanding natural beauty.

It’s true to say it’s the perfect holiday destination.

On each break, four people living with dementia and their partners or carers were able to enjoy the delights of Cornwall and have a break they didn’t think was possible.

“Must be done/joined/to be believed! A miracle of a holiday, will sign up for another asap!”

On each of the holidays, the couples enjoyed a relaxed afternoon after their arrival before dinner in the evening. The following day they enjoyed a leisurely stroll around The Lost Gardens of Heligan. Taking the time to enjoy the walled kitchen gardens, Italian garden, glasshouses, and of course not forgetting the Giant’s head. After a leisurely lunch in the cafe, they headed off to Mevagissey - a delightful, unspoilt fishing village, for a short boat trip, a wander around the harbour and a Cornish cream tea before heading home to relax before dinner.

Day 3 began at the remarkable Eden Project. The morning was spent exploring the Mediterranean Biome and, following a picnic lunch, the afternoon was spent being guided around the outdoor gardens, taking in the array of beautifully scented plants. On the way home they stopped at picturesque Charlestown, a Grade II listed harbour with a long history of Tall Ships.  They had a chance to wander around craft shops and sample some award winning ice cream.

The last day was all about exploring the countryside. A drive out to Minions and tour through the Cornish Moorlands in a remote but beautiful corner of Bodmin Moor followed by a trip to Golitha Falls for a river walk through the ancient Oak forest gave everyone an appetite for an amazing pit-smoked barbeque lunch at Inkie’s smokehouse.  They then headed to Respryn Bridge to discover the beautiful ancient woodlands of the Lanhydrock Estate. The day was rounded off on the beautiful golden sands of Pentewan beach where they paddled and dined overlooking the sea.

The holiday was so rich with exciting things to do, everyone was relaxed and engaged. They made genuine friendships and were able to have fun and laugh together. Many of the carers expressed that they hadn’t felt this relaxed since diagnosis, feeling part of a community that understood, and well looked after by our expert team of volunteers.

“Thank you all for giving us such a thoughtful, helpful and enjoyable week together, we have learnt a lot and laughed a lot, wonderful being with such understanding people and so willing to help.”

“It has been totally amazing! Cannot think of enough adjectives to describe it. Wasn't expecting for both of us to feel so cared for with such kindness and thoughtfulness. What a wonderful week”

The benefits to both the people living with dementia and their carers were tangible by the end of the holiday. There were more smiles, more laughter, more conversation and people didn’t want to go home!

Some described the holiday as “the best”, “refreshing”, “Super! Social, friendly, welcome & supportive” and “the best we have had in years.”

As usual the DA team who made it happen gave their absolute best. When asked to summarise their experience of the team, one of the holiday clients summed it up with the phrase “Don't worry, we can get what you want.” Our team are there to make sure our clients have the best holiday possible and nothing is too much trouble.

We will be offering holidays to Cornwall and a host of other exciting and beautiful destinations for 2018 very shortly. Keep an eye on our website for more information.
