Essex Dementia Day

There are over 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK, and over 20,000 in Essex.

This 19th January the pan-Essex Dementia Action Alliance is running the third annual Essex Dementia Day – and are encouraging as many people as possible to ‘Let’s Talk’ to help someone living with dementia and to help build dementia friendly communities across Essex.

This could look like volunteering on a Dementia Adventure holiday, signing up to become a Dementia Friend, volunteering at a local care home, or encouraging your workplace to become dementia friendly.

As part of the day we will be joining with a number of organisations in the High Chelmer Shopping Centre in Chelmsford, offering information, advice and support to anyone living with dementia and their friends and family. We’ll be in the main atrium from 10am-4pm. Come and say 'Hello'.

Also, on the day we will be training a number of staff from Essex County Council who have volunteered to become Dementia Ambassadors. These staff members will be volunteering up to two days a month for a year, to support people living with dementia to live well and take more positive risks to become more active. We will be equipping them with the skills and confidence to:

  • Think differently about dementia, understanding it, including common symptoms
  • Continue to see the person – not the condition
  • Receive strategies to overcome communication barriers
  • Learn how to connect with your loved one using practical tips
  • Learn the benefits of contact with nature and the outdoors
