Brian Mister

Brian joined the Dementia Adventure CIC board in June 2015 and the Dementia Adventure Trust board in December 2015.  Prior to becoming disabled Brian was a Sales & Marketing Director for 24 years and has experience in most aspects of business criteria. Before that he was a police officer for 11 years.

After acquiring his impairment Brian became interested in the disability agenda and studied the Social Model of Disability and the principles of Independent Living. These principles gave Brian back his confidence and self-esteem and he calls this his third career and has worked with many inspiring people!

He joined the Essex Coalition of Disabled People (founder member) and became Chair. Brian’s business skills became useful and he spent several years with them and led on many of their successful initiatives and led on consolidating the business into their current building.

Brian attained a Disability Equality Practitioner PG Degree at Masters Level. He is an accredited disability equality trainer and trains using all of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010.  He has a very high profile within ECC Social Care and has worked extensively with them over many years and also sits on their Senior Management and Directorate team and is consulted on many issues.  He is Co-Chair of OIL (Options for Independent Living) Transport Group is particularly proud of the successful partnership between ECC and disabled people. OIL Transport Group has won two national awards for their work on accessibility within transport.

Brian also works with NHS Health both with general hospitals and mental health and also sits on ECC Learning Difficulty Partnership Board and is a Strategic Board member of the recently launched Healthwatch Essex. Brian is also President of the local SVP (St Vincent De Paul) group.  He also works as a mentor for young disabled people and has been a school governor leading on equality and anti-bullying.

Brian was awarded the MBE (2012) for his work with disabled people.
